Preventative
Maintenance
9.3.1.1
Equipment Physical Condition 1: Shall be assigned where all the following criteria apply:
1. The equipment appears in like new condition.
2. The enclosure is clean, free from moisture intrusion, and tight.
3. No unaddressed notification from the continuous monitoring system has occurred.
4. There are no active recommendations from predictive techniques.
5. Previous maintenance has been performed in accordance with the EMP.
9.3.1.2
Equipment Physical Condition 2: Shall be assigned where all of 9.3.1.1 apply,
and where any of the following criteria apply:
1. Maintenance results deviate from past results or have indicated more frequent maintenance
in accordance with manufacturer’s published data.
2. The previous maintenance cycle has revealed issues requiring the repair or replacement of major equipment components.
3. There have been notifications from the continuous monitoring system since the prior assessment.
4. There are active recommendations from predictive techniques.
9.3.1.3
Equipment Physical Condition 3 shall be assigned where changes in operation
are noted or where any of the following criteria applies:
1. The equipment has missed the last two successive maintenance cycles in accordance with the EMP.
2. The previous two maintenance cycles have revealed issues requiring the repair or replacement of major equipment components.
3. There is an active or unaddressed notification from the continuous monitoring system.
4. There are urgent actions identified from predictive techniques.
9.3.1.4
Nonserviceable Equipment
1. Equipment that poses an imminent risk of injury or negative health effects to personnel shall be designated as nonserviceable
in accordance with 8.7.1.3. “Equipment that has a problem that is detrimental to the proper electrical operation of the equipment
shall be designated as nonserviceable.”
NFPA 70B
Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance 2023 edition, Table 9.2.2 Maintenance Intervals
EQUIPMENT CONDITION ASSESSMENT
NFPA 70B is now considered a
standard your business must follow.
Additionally, 70B contains new
information on how frequently to
perform tasks on specific equipment
in order to properly maintain it.
When determining frequency rates,
the updated 70B considers the
condition of the equipment, and
looks at factors such as operating
conditions, criticality, and operating
environment. Importantly, 70B also
requires businesses to develop,
implement, and operate an Electrical
Maintenance Program (EMP) as
a supplement to your Electrical
Safety Policy and Program. Your
EMP should identify methods
and procedures associated with
maintaining detailed, accurate
documentation to include a means
to sustain its functionality.
J.W. Didado’s Asset Management
Program is your single-source
solution for NFPA and OSHA
compliance.
SUMMARY
Ongoing preventative maintenance is a critical part of an Electrical Maintenance Program (EMP)
as outlined in NFPA 70B (2023). It enhances workplace safety, improves system reliability, boosts
production efficiency, and supports compliance with OSHA and NFPA standards. However,
maintaining compliance can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. It requires specialized tools
and trained personnel.
That’s where we come in. Our experienced technicians handle inspections and documentation so
you can stay focused on your core responsibilities. Our scheduling and reporting tools help ensure
no maintenance windows are missed. While some tasks must be performed while equipment is
energized; others require shutdowns. A well-organized asset inventory view helps manage downtime
more effectively.
FREQUENCY
NFPA 70B states that if manufacturer recommendations are unavailable and equipment
failure poses unacceptable risk, maintenance must follow the intervals in Table 9.2.2. Among
these, Infrared Thermography is the only specialized inspection required annually—and it
must be done while equipment is energized. Only qualified personnel should perform
this task.
J.W. Didado has the expertise and equipment to safely perform these inspections
with covers off and power on. During these visits, we can also provide ultrasonic
imaging, visual inspections, Equipment Condition Assessments (ECA), circuit
verification, device photo updates, with full documentation and accountability
in our secure SOC2 – Type II online portal.
We offer both on-demand services and one or three-year maintenance
plans. Our three-year plans provide additional cost savings to help
lock in pricing for capital expense planning. We also offer pricing for
more complex maintenance involving shutdowns and repairs and
can break your system into manageable groups with quarterly
inspection options. These plans are designed to give you peace
of mind and a clear path to compliance and reliability
